Somatic Movement

Somatic movement is a restorative mindful movement practice that is mainly done lying on the floor with your eyes closed guided by verbal description. It is a powerful whole body experience that heals and nourishes our physical, cognitive and mental wellbeing.

 

Somatic Movement focuses on restoring neurological ease, balance, harmony and relaxation to the body and mind.

Through somatic movement you will recover dexterity, fluidity and lightness in your body. Somatic movement reduces the impact of ageing on the body.
It rewires and reconnects parts of our brain and body that have lost agility over time.
It improves cognitive functioning, mental clarity and memory.

Somatic Movement experiences are verbally guided with full description of all movements-
So for classes online you don’t have to look at the screen!
No need to “copy” the teacher- you can enjoy the whole class with your eyes closed!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Somatic Movement is a means of resolving inefficient movement patterns and chronic pain that the body has developed through tension, stress, trauma or bad habit.

It re-educates the sensory motor system to recover innate abilities for greater voluntary muscular control. It is physically and cognitively engaging and trains proprioceptive sensing. It helps release chronic neuromuscular contraction patterns and limited range of movement. Somatic education nourishes and improves the functioning of the whole person.

As we age certain muscle groups become less efficient through lack of use or bad habit. When we cannot control muscles as well as we used to this is known as neuromuscular amnesia. The only way to improve this is through active awareness and kinaesthetic perception of the muscles and a relearning of how to effectively coordinate their movements. This is our focus in a Somatic Movement Lesson.

Somatic Movement Lessons can be facilitated online, in group classes or by clinic visit.

1:1 sessions include hands-on feedback and supported movement.

Specific exercises will be recommended for the client’s daily practice to improve ease and range of movement in the body.

 Therapeutic processes have benefited clients managing symptoms of fibromyalgia, cystic fibrosis, spinal lordosis, migraine, high blood pressure, lower back tension, poor body image, eating disorders, depression as well as those recovering from accidents, injury, grief and loss. The deep healing and harmony restored in the body has also helped those wishing to conceive.

All one to one and group sessions are customised to the ‘alive’ or current needs of the individuals. 

The intent is always to empower the person with balance and harmony in their body, and clarity and calm in their mind so that they become the catalyst of their own healing, enhanced self-belief, greater fulfilment and joy in their lives.
